Innovative Nit – Occlud ASD-R systems are implanted to 3 Ukrainian children: Kuprienko Ilya from Chmelnitsky region (5 years), Kuzyna Polina from Kharkiv region (6 years) and Kruk Jana from Rivne region (9 years). All these children suffer congenital heart defect (CHD) – atrial septal defect, all of them are from low-income families.

Atrial septal defect (ASD) form 5-7% of all CHDs. It also makes about one third of all the CHDs diagnosed in adults, females suffer more often, than males. This type of defect mean the presence of a large foramed in interatrial septum, that cause blood to flow from the left atrium to the right. As a result, the lower (pulmonary) circle of circulation becomes overloaded by extra blood volume. Clinical symptoms of the defect and pronounced complaints without correction usually appear in the second decade of life. At that time the heart cavities dilate, pulmonary artery pressure rise and heart rhythm disturbances appear.

At the moment, the best treatment for ASD, which is safe and effective, consists in special device – occlude – implantation. This up-to-date, minimally invasive procedure is done in heart catheterization laboratory.

The novel Nit – Occlud ASD-R system, implanted to the patients, has many advantages;
It is produced without soldering and additional fixators, so the amount of material (metal) is diminished, that enable thinner profiles for the delivery of the occlude to it’s implantation place.
Because of the membrane, covering the nitinol disc from the left atrium, and diminishing of the occlude material, thrombotic risk is reduced.
This system is implanted by Heart Institute cardiac surgeon Konstantin Boyko and his colleague from Polish clinic Robert Sabinevich.
