Department for Pathology of Myocardium and Transplantation of Organs and Tissues

Department for pathology of myocardium and transplantation of human organs and tissues is one of the essential curative and diagnostic units of the State Institution “Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine”.

Broadly defined, pathology of myocardium should be understood as a biochemical structural change in the cardiac muscle following almost any disease of the heart muscle, such as ischemic heart disease, myocarditis, acquired heart defects, cardiomyopathies, arterial hypertension, and so on. It is not established as a separate diagnosis; however, one should bear in mind that any disease of the heart muscle is followed by metabolic disorders in the human organism as a whole.

Heart transplantation is a curative treatment of end-stage heart failure. Professionals of the department, led by Director of the Clinic Borys Todurov, perform heart transplant operations, which nowadays are unique in Ukraine.

“Mechanical Heart” is another focus area of the department at the premises of which operations on implantation of left ventricular assistance devices (LVAD) are performed.

The department is equipped with the state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities of expert class, which meet the requirements of international standards. The department is staffed with qualified professionals who underwent postgraduate education and residency training in cardiac surgery at the leading clinics in Europe. Surgeons and cardiologists of the department regularly participate in international conferences and congresses that provides an opportunity to incorporate innovative medical advances into practice, continuously improving the approach to patient treatment.
