Two unique people with transplanted hearts – Ukrainian Eduard Sokolov and Frenchman Paul Baudry – met at the Heart Institute of the Heart. Edward’s heart was transplanted by Borys Todurov exactly 15 years ago – in July 2003. Paul received a new heart in 2009 at the Hopital de la Pitié clinic thanks to Dr. Aubert.

At the age of 16 the patient was diagnosed with an infective endocarditis of the aortic valve and in 1989 she was successfully operated by Professor A. Rudenko. At that time a ball prosthesis of the aortic valve was implanted, which successfully worked for 29 years.

At the conference hall of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, a meeting of doctors and patients with the famous Indian transplant doctor Dr. Komarakshi Balakishnan was held. He is one of the top ten best transplanters in the world.

The main purpose of the workshop was to train physicians on the practical application of the latest American and European approved guidelines for echocardiographic visualization of the heart.

About 100 cardiologists, therapists, cardiac surgeons, resuscitators, anesthesiologists, and functional diagnostics physicians took part in the conference. The traditional main goal of the forum is to acquaint doctors of different specialties with the latest achievements in cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology.

A boy from the Rivne region was born on 27th week of pregnancy with a weight of 870 g with two heart defects – coarctation of the aorta, hypoplasia of the aortic arc and with open Botallo’s duct. During the month, Rivne doctors took care about child and then took him to the Heart Institute. Upon just 2.5 hours after the child’s arrival to the clinic, he was successfully operated by a team of doctors headed by cardiac surgeon Vasyl Karpenko and anesthetist Iryna Galamay.

30 best students of senior courses and interns from 15 medical universities of Ukraine were trained at the Heart Institute. This is a joint project of the Heart Institute with UAMED (NGO “Ukrainian Association of Specialists in the Development of Medical Education”), which is held for the third year in a row. Participants of internships took part in operations and got experience of practical work in different departments of the clinic.
