On March 12, 2021, an extremely important and cordial event took place in Lviv – “Gathering of people with transplanted organs.” This event brought together the people who have created a new history of Ukrainian transplantology over the past year. 14 out of 40 patients who got a chance to survive were able to attend the event and tell their stories.

Recently, at the Heart Institute, another endovascular prosthesis of the aortic valve of the heart (TAVI) was performed on a 78-year-old patient with critical aortic stenosis.

From February 18 to 25, 2021, a team of doctors from the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine led by Prof. Borys Todurov shared their experience in Uzbekistan at the invitation of colleagues from the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Cardiology in Samarkand.
The trip was very intense, rich and bright.

A year ago, for the first time in 15 long breaks, a heart transplant was performed from a posthumous donor. Vasyl Mihovka, a 56-year-old Ukrainian from Transcarpathia, underwent surgery. It was an important day – a new history of Ukrainian cardiac transplantation began.

The whole team of the Heart Institute is excited – another heart transplant took place tonight, which was flawlessly performed by the team headed by Gavril Kovtun, Head of the Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Department of the Heart Institute.

Specialists of the Heart Institute – pediatric cardiorheumatologist, ultrasound specialist Tetyana Bilyk and cardiac surgeon Andriy Markovets visited cities of Kolomyia and Kosiv in Ivano-Frankivsk region on February 17 and 18. During the visit, our doctors consulted about 100 adult patients and children.

The surgery was complicated. The mechanical heart was not sutured to the normal myocardium: the patient had a thinned and not sufficiently dense aneurysm, so first a tricuspid valve plastic surgery and resection of a giant postinfarction left ventricular aneurysm were performed, and then a mechanical heart was sutured to the remains of the aneurysm.

A 78-year-old patient underwent septal alcohol ablation of an obstructive form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy last year, and after a reduction in the gradient, TAVI procedure was performed in safer conditions (to avoid suicide ventricle syndrome). The patient was discharged home in good condition.
