The Heart Institute Team Started Heart and Lung Transplant Training at the Stanford University Transplant Center

06-11-2023

The team of the Heart Institute started training in heart and lung transplant training in one of the most famous hospitals in the world – the Stanford University Transplant Center (Palo Alto, California, USA). It is still hard for us to believe it, but the dream is becoming a reality right now – Prof. Borys Todurov, Sofia Chaikovska, Serhiy Sudakevych, Ihor Kuzmych, Mykola Melnyk – have joined the team of transplant specialists at Stanford Hospital and are getting the experience of transplantation in the American way.
Since its inception, Stanford Hospital has been a driving force in the development of world medicine. It was in these walls in the distant 1960s that Norman Shumway created the technique of heart transplantation and experimentally proved that heart transplantation is possible.

Surgeons from all over the world came here to learn transplantation, and Christian Bernard, after such a visit, dared to perform the first-ever heart transplant in Cape Town, using the surgical technique developed by Shumway. A month after this event, Norman Shumway managed to perform the first heart transplant in the United States.

During the week, our team already participated in five lung and heart transplants, flying to different states of America, where they participated in multi-organ harvesting, learned the use of Transmedics lung and heart perfusion machines, and studied the details of organ implantation.

The training continues, and we will share interesting information with you. Very soon, we will implement the new knowledge and experience gained within the walls of the Heart Institute.
All for the health of our patients. We are moving Ukrainian medicine and transplantology forward!

Thank you to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Viktor Lyashko, Oksana Dmytrieva, Vasyl Strilka, and Dmytro Koval for doing everything you can to ensure that we can provide the highest quality care to our patients.
We thank our compatriots who represent our country in the world: Nataliya Kovalchuk, Rostyslav Semikov, Nelya Melnychuk, Olenka Steciw, Villarreal, Help Ukraine Group (HUG), Peace and Development Foundation, Global Medical Knowledge Alliance, who made our training possible and left us warm memories.
