The team of the Heart Institute spent a week interning in Gothenburg, Sweden, and discovered a special Swedish way of life – “lagom”. This is when everything is in moderation, without excesses.
What does “lagom” look like in medicine?
– Professors go to work by tram, like everyone else;
– Doctors eat simple food in ordinary cafes;
– There is no ostentatious luxury in the hospital – everything is functional and comfortable.
Borys Todurov, Serhii Sudakevych, Sofia Chaikovska, and Mykola Melnyk were amazed at how this approach affects the work of Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
Of course, our doctors also studied new methods of operations and transplants. They assisted in operations on the heart and lungs and got acquainted with perfusion technologies and anesthesiological support of the clinic and the general organization of work. They took part in organ harvesting and learned the specifics of performing heart and lung transplants by Scandinavian doctors.
As part of the visit, Prof. Borys Todurov, General Director General of the Heart Institute, gave a powerful speech on wartime medicine and transplantation at the Scandinavian Congress of Thoracic Surgeons in Gothenburg, Sweden. The team of the Institute had the honor of representing our country and the medical community.
We are sincerely grateful to Prof. Göran Dellgren, Transplant Surgeon, Head of the Department of Surgery at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Vice President of the World Association of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), President of the Scandinavian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, President of the European Association of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ESHLT), and most importantly – a true friend of Ukraine for inviting and organizing this invaluable training.
This trip gave us not only new knowledge but also true friends among colleagues!
