Conference “Current Issues of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery”


On October 30, 2020, the sixth annual registered scientific-practical online conference “Current Issues of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery” took place at the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. It was organized with the active participation of the Departments of Functional Diagnostics and Cardiac Surgery, X-ray Endovascular and Extracorporeal Technologies of the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (NMAPE) named after P. Shupik.

The purpose of the forum was to acquaint doctors of various specialties with innovations in the field of cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology, methods of functional diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases, introduced into clinical practice during the last year. The conference was an important milestone in the cooperation of the Heart Institute, the departments of the Academy, and Vilnius University (Lithuania) whose specialists made four reports.

The head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, X-ray Endovascular and Extracorporeal Technologies of NMAPE, corresponding member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Borys Todurov addressed the participants of the conference. The conference was moderated by the Head of the Department of Functional Diagnostics, Professor Oleg Zharinov.

Topics of the plenary session covered the latest aspects of cardiac surgery for aortic valve defects, including the use of endovascular technologies (Borys Todurov, Andiry Khokhlov), the use of methods for assessing the fractional reserve of blood flow to determine the hemodynamic value of coronary artery stenosis (Mykola Stan), echocardiography valvular stenoses (D. Zakarkaite), legal aspects of heart transplantation (V. Janushauskas), diagnosis of amyloidosis of the heart (G. Balchunaite) and treatment of paraprosthetic fistulas (O. Zorin).

Within the framework of satellite symposia the priority directions of modern pharmacotherapy of cardiac diseases with comorbidity, in particular, secondary prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (Vasyl Babenko), cardiooncology (S. Kozhukhov), and use of inhibitors of sodium-dependent glucose type 2 cotransport for in the treatment of heart failure in patients with diabetes mellitus (J. Saenko, Oleg Zharinov) were considered.
