Heart Institute at the 2026 Military Healthcare Research Symposium in Orlando (FL, USA)

Serhii Sudakevych, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Extracorporeal Therapies at the Heart Institute gave a podium presentation on the use of ECMO in military and civilian casualties of combat trauma at the 2026 Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) in Orlando (FL, USA)— world’s most authoritative military‑scientific forums in this field.

Within the Organ Support session, the presentation highlighted the leading role of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in the clinical implementation of portable battery operated ECMO, including heparin‑free ECMO for patients with war-related injuries in Ukraine.

The technology of Multimodal Extracorporeal Life Support (MELS) was developed and tested by Dr. Andriy Batchinsky and his team at the Autonomous Reanimation and Evacuation (AREVA) Research Institute and Innovation center in San Antonio, Texas.

Professor Borys Todurov and the Heart Institute team have been collaborating with the AREVA institute led by Dr. Batchinsky for several years. The combination of advanced scientific developments by US colleagues and the unique clinical experience of Ukrainian physicians expands the possibilities for saving patients with severe combat trauma.
