Heart Institute Surgeons Remove a Large Fragment from Beneath the Heart of a Ukrainian Soldier

A Ukrainian soldier was evacuated from the frontline to the Heart Institute with a massive fragment lodged beneath his heart.

Professor Borys Todurov and his team performed a highly complex surgery using artificial circulation, which helped prevent massive blood loss and saved the warrior’s life. The situation was critically dangerous — a sharp 7‑centimeter piece of artillery shrapnel had stopped just a millimeter away from the heart. “Born in an armored vyshyvanka,” says the soldier, Oleksandr.
