Successful Family Kidney Transplant: Wife Became a Donor for Her Husband

09-08-2024

The story of this operation began quite a while ago.
Ten months ago, a couple – Oleg and Tatyana – turned to us during an on-site consultation with our specialists in Mykolaiv. We diagnosed Oleg with critical heart valve stenosis, which required immediate surgery.
The situation was complicated by the fact that Oleg had been on hemodialysis for 6 years. Three times a week, 4 hours under the machine – and so on year after year.
It seemed that there was no hope: a complex heart disease became an obstacle to a kidney transplant, and the lack of kidney function did not allow heart surgery. Oleg was refused in many clinics.
But not at the Heart Institute! In the first stage, cardiac surgeon Yuriy Kharenko successfully operated on the heart, prosthetically replacing the mitral valve. After Oleg’s full recovery, the head of the department of transplantation and abdominal surgery, Mykhailo Zagriychuk, performed a kidney transplant taken from his wife, Tatyana.
Now both problems are behind us. Oleg and Tatyana feel good. The new kidney works as it should. Ahead of them is a new life without dialysis and heart pain.
This operation has already resulted in the over-the-hundredth family transplant in Ukraine. Each such success is a step forward for Ukrainian medicine
