Professional School on Coronary Heart Disease and Atherosclerosis

On April 3-4, 2025, a unique CPD (Continuous Professional Development) event took place – a full-time professional school on coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis for 12 cardiologists from different regions of Ukraine. Its organizers were the Heart Institute and the Shupyk National University of Health Care.

The topics of the professional school covered the most relevant aspects of etiopathogenesis, diagnostics, and treatment of dyslipidemias, acute and chronic forms of coronary heart disease. Prof. Oleh Zharinov covered in detail the controversial aspects of the European guidelines for the diagnosis of chronic coronary syndromes. The latest aspects of ultrasound diagnostics of atherosclerosis of major vessels were covered in the report of the doctor of functional diagnostics Irina Shkurat. Indications for primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death were covered in the lecture of the head of the cardiac arrhythmias department Oleksandr Hrytsay. Electrocardiographic differential diagnostics of coronary heart disease was discussed in the seminar of the associate professor of the department of functional diagnostics Viktor Kuts. Drug treatment of coronary heart disease and ways to correct risk factors were discussed in the reports of associate professor Liliya Tkachenko and cardiologist Olena Onyshchenko. The head of the department of cardiology, laboratory and functional diagnostics of the Karazin Kharkiv National University, Prof. Vira Tseluyko, covered in detail modern approaches to the treatment of dyslipidemias.

Of particular interest to the listeners was the visit to clinical departments, in particular, the opportunity to examine patients after heart transplantation operations. The heads of departments Gavrilo Kovtun, Olga Yepanchintseva, and Andriy Khokhlov took part in the rounds of the departments of endovascular surgery and angiography, intensive care for adults, myocardial pathology, and organ and tissue transplantation. They drew the attention of doctors to the peculiarities of patient selection for endovascular and cardiac surgical interventions, including heart transplantation, and postoperative patient management.

The audience received answers from each speaker to numerous questions. All participants of the school successfully answered the test questions prepared by the speakers and will receive CPD certificates.
