The team of doctors from the Heart Institute spent a week training at Melbourne’s leading cardiothoracic centers: The Alfred Health and The Royal Children’s Hospital.
Throughout the program, they participated in all cardiac surgeries. They were fortunate to witness a unique heart transplantation for a patient after a Fontan procedure, two lung transplants, and the full spectrum of cardiothoracic interventions performed with excellence by Professor Silvana Marasco, Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and her team.
The doctors also mastered the ECMO program, explored extracorporeal technologies used in Australia, and studied perfusion devices for transporting donor organs.
Professor Borys Todurov delivered four lectures: two for the Alfred Health medical community and two for the Ukrainian diaspora. He shared how Ukrainian doctors continue saving lives during wartime—performing transplants under shelling and refusing to give up. On Australian television, they spoke about the realities of life and work for Ukrainian physicians in these challenging conditions.
Special gratitude goes to:
• Jodi Gillot, President of the Transplant Nurses’ Society, and all colleagues at Alfred Health for their warm welcome and knowledge sharing.
• The Embassy of Ukraine in Australia, Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Sydney Ms. Kateryna Argyrou, and the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations for their support in organizing the training.
• Cardinal Mykola Bychok, the only Cardinal of Ukraine, the youngest Cardinal in the world, participant of the conclave, and Cardinal for Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania, for his comprehensive support.
We learn from the best and share our experience with the world.
